Research Center for Innovative Lifestyle DesignThe Research Center for Innovative Lifestyle Design promotes the research and development of systems that will support the discovery and utilization of potentials in individuals in positively contributing to society with designing of "Life worth living."
Designing "life worth living" through the discovery and utilization of potentials in individualsJapanese society today is facing a problem of "losing a purpose for life." Among many who face this problem are the elderly unable to find opportunities to utilize their lifelong knowledge and experience, the working generation struggling to exercise their full potential, and young individuals unaware of what they can do or want to do, and continuing selfsearching without a purpose. In order for our society to recover its vigor and international competitiveness, it is necessary to help these people to discover, or rediscover, the "joy of life."The major aim of the welfare-engineering field has long been the pursuit of a safe and comfortable life for both the able-bodied and the physically-impaired through researching and developing systems that can help compensate for impairment or lost abilities. In contrast, this center focuses on "potential abilities" that have not been recognized or exercised fully. We research and develop systems with applied ICT (Information and communication technology) to support the discovery of potentials in individuals, groups or communities, and design creative lifestyles that will best utilize such systems. When people feel that they can fully exercise their abilities and make a contribution to their community, they can truly experience the joy of life. This center aims to realize a more complete, purposeful and joyful life for all kinds of people, regardless of differences.
Research DetailsThe center researches and develops systems to assist individuals in discovering and exercising their potentials. We will endeavor to develop supporting systems that let people aware their own unaware potentials, systems that allows people pre-experience what they become able to do when they master certain skills, systems that link people’s experience and knowledge to the benefit of those who need it, and so on. Concrete examples of the center’s activities include designing and creation of music or image contents, and teaching of physical skills, such as those delivered through sports. We will conduct real-life fieldwork to design a new society and lifestyles through these support systems.
Research FacilitiesIt is essential to analyze and research human activity, in order to design systems that will support the discovery and exercise of potentials in individuals and also evaluate implemented systems. For this reason, this center is equipped with a variety of facilities to study various intellectual activities of humans including the facilities to observe and measure both individual and cooperative actions, and bioinstrumentation devices to measure the brain, point of gaze, electrocardiograph and physical movements. For immediate and virtual trying-out of ideas, 3D printers and personal fabrication facilities are readily available.

Education Research Topics- Research and development of the universal media necessary for creational activities that can effectively bring out people’s creative capability, with the aim of realizing a society where every individual can play an active role in knowledge creation.
- Promotion of research in key areas including computer graphics, basic studies and practices for expansion and support technology of media creation, and media art, with an emphasis on the creation of pioneering media representation as a main concept.
- Applied studies under the motto, "Realization of the next generation computing environment through research and development of systems to support human activities." The key elements here are database, information search, visualization of information, information filtering, web information processing (Semantic Web), ubiquitous and aware technology.
- Research and development of various systems to support education and research at JAIST’s schools through the construction and operation of a knowledge creation support system.
